JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE- and NYSE-listed Sibanye Gold on Monday announced that its Driefontein mine had resumed output following a fire at power utility Eskom’s Midas substation last week.
The fire at the substation started as a result of a lightning strike, cutting power to various gold mines in the Klerksdorp and Carletonville areas.
Sibanye expected Driefontein to ramp-up to steady-state output within this week but warned that the power outage and the production ramp-up would likely result in production losses of about 9 452 oz for the March quarter.
Fellow gold miner AngloGold Ashanti also reported on Monday that it was likely to lose 20 000 oz of production as a result of the power failure.
