The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa) announced on Thursday that it would launch the Seifsa Awards for Excellence in 2015.

The awards, which would take place on March 19, would seek to recognise and celebrate companies that had played a crucial role in socioeconomic upliftment in the metals and engineering sector, while also encouraging continuous excellence in the sector, Seifsa marketing and communications executive Adelia Pimentel said in a statement.

The awards offer ten different categories, including the most innovative company of the year, the customer service award of the year and the most transformed company of the year.

An award would go to a company with a good corporate social initiative that had a major impact on the lives of its beneficiaries, while a health and safety award of the year would be presented to a company with the best legal compliance record in health and safety or the lowest lost time injury frequency rate.

An environment stewardship award would also be awarded to the company that had made the biggest strides towards conserving the environment and in mitigating the impact of its operations on the environment.

As it was the Decade of the Artisan, a programme launched by the Department of Higher Education and Training to promote artisanship as a career of choice to South Africa’s youth, an award would also be made to the company that had trained the highest number of artisans.
