Dissolving pulp producer Sappi’s Cloquet mill, in the US, is one of the first dissolving pulp facilities to complete an external environmental management verification process.

The mill achieved a final score of greater than 80% on the Higg Facility Environmental Management (FEM) verification audit, which is an endorsement of sound environmental practices employed by Cloquet.

The facility produces dissolving pulp sold under the brand name Verve.

Supporting the call to accelerate transparency in the textile and apparel sector, a detailed performance report will be made available to all key stakeholders on request, Sappi said in a statement on December 9.

“As a global leader in dissolving pulp manufacturing, we are excited about the SAC Higg FEM results for our Verve product,” said Sappi North America MD Tom Radovich.

He added that the Cloquet mill had always been a key part of the company’s environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives and said the company would “continue to look for innovative ways to strengthen our position”.

Cloquet also received a verified score of 100% across energy, water and wastewater management, highlighting the mill as a pocket of excellence in terms of resource efficiency and emission control.
