Rocla was recognised at the recent 2018 Concrete Manufacturer’s Association (CMA) Awards for their innovative Thuthukisa sanitation units installed at the Amatole Municipality Sanitation Project based in Butterworth, Eastern Cape.

Nominated by Afrisam, Rocla won in the ‘Engineering Excellence Product Innovation Exceeding 100kg’ and ‘Overall Winner for Engineering Excellence’ categories.

Rocla Product Development Manager, Andre Labuschagne said “It is a proud moment for Rocla when their engineering innovations are recognised by the CMA. The Thuthukisa sanitation units are not only unique through design, but also unique in the role they play in skills transfer and upliftment for the communities where they are installed”.

Rocla’s Thuthukisa sanitation units enables community members or SMME’s to manufacture concrete toilet units exactly where they are needed. They are lightweight enough to easily be transported to their final site placement or can be manufactured right there where they will be erected. The capital requirement usually associated with a manufacturing facility, no matter the project size is eliminated.

“‘Thuthukisa’ means ‘to share’, and it was based on this philosophy that our design team came up with the development of the sanitation unit that has the added benefit of resulting waste material being able to be recycled into practical items for everyday use” concluded Labuschagne.

Rocla is part of the IS Group of companies which includes Technicrete and Ocon Brick.
