The South African economy undoubtedly faces its own specific domestic weaknesses; from the electricity shortfall and regional drought conditions to its educational backlogs and skills deficit. But the global environment is also far less favourable than was the case ahead of the 2008 global financial crisis. The country is highly vulnerable to the slowdown in China, the associated decline in commodity demand and prices and the uncertainty surrounding the timing of the US interest-rate normalisation process.
