Rio Tinto announces two board appointments

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant Rio Tinto has appointed Anne Lauvergeon and Simon Thompson as nonexecutive directors to its board, with both also appointed to the sustainability and nominations committees.

Lauvergeon, who will assume her role on March 15, has over 30 years experience across a number of fields, including the steel industry, and served as executive officer for French nuclear group Areva.

Thompson’s appointment will take effect on April 1. He has a degree in geology and has held investment banking positions before joining miner Anglo American in 1995, where he held a number of senior roles, including executive director.

Meanwhile, Rio also announced that Vivien Cox would retire as a nonexecutive director from April 15, after serving on the board for nine years.

Rio chairperson Jan du Plessis said on Thursday that the company was also making progress in identifying another Australian to join its board as a nonexecutive director, and would make an announcement on this appointment in due course.
