Refurbished fashion outlet receives new LED lighting

BRIGHT IDEA The use of LED lighting in a retail environment ensures that customers can accurately perceive the colour of the product being displayed

Electrical solutions provider Magnet supplied a range of light-emitting diode (LED) light fittings to the newly refurbished Q’Dos fashion outlet at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, last year.

Magnet lighting solutions engineer Kaylen Reddy explains that the design objectives of this project required “special lighting to create an enchanting ambience in the shop and accentuate the distinct styles, textures and colours of the exclusive Q’Dos clothing collection”.

He comments that the use of LED lighting in a retail environment is essential, as the colour rendering indexes of high-quality LED products are much higher than those of fluorescent products.

Colour rendering describes how a light source can influence how the colour of an object appears to the human eye and how well subtle variations in colour shades are perceived. The use of LED lighting in a retail environment ensures that customers can more accurately perceive the various colours of the products displayed.

Reddy notes that the installation, completed in May last year, “encompassed a selection of four different types of light fittings with high luminous flux to perfectly suit the illumination of this environment – these fittings include downlights, recessed and surface ceiling lights, as well as strip lights”.

Fittings from luminaire manufacturer SLV – having incorporated the latest design and LED technologies – were selected to create the desired lighting effect. The SLV SUPROS range consists of three downlights, one surface-mounted rotatable downlight, a recessed downlight and a pendant option, which was not used for this design project.

Reddy notes that these luminaires, which contain built-in LED lamps, have a colour rendering index of >80 Ra, an emitting angle of 60 and a luminous flux of 3 000 lm. The expected service life of these ceiling lights is about 50 000 hours. The driver-on-board technology in all fittings of this series allows for direct connection to the 230 V supply.

The energy efficient lighting range has been designed to suit individual styling requirements. The integrated and wide flooding reflectors can be replaced with reflectors that have smaller beam angles, without the need for any tools. LED solutions and dimmable products with retrofit lamps, as well as devices with integrated dimmable LEDs, are also available.

Magnet’s understanding of lighting systems, coupled with design and installation services, in-house testing facilities and experienced lighting engineers, ensures enhanced aesthetics and optimum energy efficiency in diverse industries.

SLV’s technical and decorative interior and exterior lighting devices are available in South Africa exclusively from Magnet. The company supports this comprehensive product range with technical advisory, installation and maintenance service.

“Our SLV range has over 4 000 products. With that wide offering for the retail sector and Magnet’s exceptional lighting design team, we are the ideal choice for any client,” Reddy states.

Interior designers Partners in Design founder Glenn Rogers adds that, from its first meeting at the Magnet showroom, Reddy approached each lighting challenge with ingenuity and a thorough technical assessment.

Rogers says he and the client were impressed with the attention to detail and the professional attitude Magnet instilled, with the finished interior of Q’Dos certainly reflecting the quality of lighting design and the fittings, he concludes.
