Name and Location
Punta Alcalde thermoelectric plant project, Chile.

Client
Endesa.

Project Description
The Punta Alcalde project will be located in the Atacama region, in the province of Huasco.

It will involve the construction and operation of a thermal plant with two 370 MW generating units; a mechanised pier to unload coal, which will be transported by sea; storage space for the coal and limestone; and a tank to dispose of ashes and slag residue from the process.

The plant will connect to the Maitencillo trunk substation through a 220 kV transmission system.

It will include a desalination and demineralising plant, as well as an intake and a cooling water discharge system.

The main source of fuel will be sub-bituminous coal.

The generating units will, consequently, be fitted with sleeve filters and electrostatic precipitators to reduce particulate emissions, a wet-gas desulphuriser using limestone and derivatives as a reagent to control sulphur dioxide, low nitrous oxide (NOx) burners and a selectivecatalytic reduction system to control the NOx.

Value
The project is estimated at $1.4-billion.

Latest Developments
Endesa has reported that a Ministerial group has lifted a suspension on energy firm Endesa’s 740 MW Punta Alcalde coal-fired thermoelectric project.

An environmental commission blocked the project in June this year, citing the project’s potential to cause water and air pollution.
