Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has formally declared the Prince Edward Islands to be South Africa’s first offshore Marine Protected Area (MPA). The sub-Antarctic islands, comprising Prince Edward and Marion, contain vast populations of seals and seabirds, which use the islands to breed and moult. The MPA comprises three types of zones: a 12 nautical-mile sanctuary zone; four restricted zones, in which fishing effort is limited; and a controlled zone, linking the four restricted areas.
