Project Star, Brazil

Name of the Project
Project Star.

Location
The project is located in Lençóis Paulista, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Project Owner/s
Bracell Group.

Project Description
The project will expand the dissolving pulp mill production capacity from 250 000 t/y to 1.5-million tons a year.

The new mill will have a flexible line designed to primarily produce dissolving pulp and will feature best-in-class technology. Among the key innovations is a biorefinery that controls material inputs to maximise recycling, minimises waste and significantly reduces the environmental footprint.

Potential Job Creation
Over a two- to three-year period, Project Star will employ up to 7 500 workers during the peak of the project with an average of about 3 500 workers. On completion, the operation will employ up to 2 100 direct workers and 1 900 outsourced workers permanently in the factory and forestry activities.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at seven-billion reais.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction started in April 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2021.

Latest Developments
Bracell has awarded Andritz a contract to supply energy efficient and environment-friendly pulp production technologies and key process equipment for the project.

Andritz will provide four of the six most important process islands in the pulp mill – the wood processing plant, a high-energy kraft recovery boiler,  fibre lines and an EvoPulp drying system – which are to be supplied on an engineering, procurement, construction and civil construction basis.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Pöyry (EPCM) and Andritz (pulp production technologies and process equipment).
