The annual percentage change in the producer price index (PPI) for final manufactured goods was 7% in January this year, Statistics SA said on Thursday.

This was up from 6.5% in December last year.

From December to January the PPI for final manufactured goods increased by 1%.

Stats SA said the main contributors to the rise were food products, beverages and tobacco products, coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products and metals, machinery, equipment, and computing equipment.

The annual percentage change in the PPI for intermediate manufactured goods was 9.3% in January, compared with 8.1% in December last year.

From December last year to January 2014 the PPI for intermediate manufactured goods increased by 2.4%.

"The main contributors to the annual rate of 9.3% were chemicals, rubber and plastic products, and basic and fabricated metals," Stats SA said.

"The main contributors to the monthly increase of 2.4% were basic and fabricated metals and recycling and manufacturing."

In electricity and water the annual percentage change in PPI was 14.5%.

The annual percentage change in the PPI mining was 4.8 percent in January, compared to 2.4% in December.

"The main contributors to the annual rate of 4.8% were nonferrous metal ores and coal and gas," Stats SA said.

In Agriculture, forestry and fishing, the annual percentage change in the PPI was 5.6% in January, compared to 4.1% in December.
