PPC unveils laboratory workings

Cement manufacturer PPC recently held a media tour to show how cement is formulated. The company’s Jupiter plant is a popular landmark and can be seen from the N3 near Heriotdale. Dylan Slater tells us more.

PPC’s Germiston-based Jupiter plant is home to an extensive raw-material and end-product laboratory, which is used to determine the quality of raw materials and how the end product will perform in its respective scenario.

To ensure raw materials are correctly sourced and mixed into the various cement specifications, Shamona describes the extent laboratory work that gets performed prior to the cement being manufactured, as well what goes into testing and analysis post-production.

The composition of the various raw materials that go into cement play a critical role in how the cement will perform as well as its overall longevity in various construction applications. To determine this chemical composition, PPC head of Chemistry Laboratory Thandeka Mamabolo runs us through the processes undertaken at the Jupiter plant’s chemistry laboratory and how it is used to custom-specify cement for key clients and unique applications
