Ports Regulator rejects TNPA proposed 14.39% tariff hike

The Ports Regulator of South Africa has rejected the Transnet National Ports Authority’s request for a 14.39% tariff increase for services and facilities offered by the authority for the period April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.

After considering the application and all submissions submitted by stakeholders, the regulator determined what it considered to be more appropriate tariff book adjustments for the 2014/15 tariff year, it said in a statement last week.

The regulator said all cargo dues would increase by 5.9% with the exception of dry bulk cargo dues for coal, iron-ore and manganese and the dues for all marine services and related tariffs, which would increase by 8.15%.

The marine services tariffs included sections 1 to 8 of the tariff book, but excluded Section 7, which dealt with cargo dues.

The regulator advised that it would reveal its motivation for the decision in due course.
