Plans to revamp old townships

Government and the City of Johannesburg plan to revitalise old townships, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said during his state-of-the-province address on Monday.

Focus would be on Kliptown in Soweto and Alexandra, next to Sandton.

"The two townships are in a terrible and sorry state of disrepair," Makhura said in a speech prepared for delivery in the provincial legislature in Johannesburg.

Makhura said 14 000 housing units would be built in Lion Park, Diepsloot East, Fleurhof, Cosmo City, Malibongwe Ridge, and Goud Rand.

There would also be upgrades in the Masingita, Rietfontein, Waterfall, Modderfontein, and Steyn areas.

"All these developments will have major socio-economic benefits with regard to decent employment and economic inclusion," said Makhura.

The multi-billion rand projects were expected to create thousands of jobs.
