International packaging and paper group Mondi has appointed Fred Phaswana as joint chairperson with effect from June 1.

Phaswana, who was currently chairperson of Standard Bank Group, Standard Bank of South Africa, the South African Institute of International Affairs and nonexecutive director of Naspers, would replace Cyril Ramaphosa, who stepped down at Mondi’s annual general meeting earlier this month.

He was formally regional president of BP Africa, a nonexecutive director of Anglo American and chairperson of Anglo American South Africa, Anglo American Platinum, Transnet, Ethos Private Equity, the South African National Energy Association and the advisory board of the Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

Phaswana would be a member of Mondi’s dual-listed company nominations committee.

“The Mondi Group boards and I are delighted that Fred will be joining us. He brings extensive experience in board and senior business leadership roles and his knowledge of the South African business environment will be of particular benefit to Mondi,” commented Mondi joint chairperson David Williams.
