The R120-million Phase 1 rehabilitation of the R36 road between Lydenburg and N4 Schoemanskloof intersection, in Mpumalanga, is expected to be completed by November 2016, the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport said on Monday.

The road played a vital role in tourism and mining activities around the Mashishing area, but had deteriorated owing to heavy trucks from the local mining companies using it daily.

“This is one of many important roads in the province, which require new investment for rehabilitation or repairs, against very limited funding,” the department said.

While the rehabilitation on the 15 km of road that formed the first phase was under way, routine maintenance would be carried out on the other sections of the road.
