PG Bison investment projects, South Africa – update

Name of the Project
PG Bison investment projects.

Location
Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
PG Bison, a subsidiary of KAP Industrial Holdings.

Project Description
PG Bison announced in November at the 2020 South Africa Investment Conference that it planned to roll out several capital projects in South Africa over the next three years.

The company is investing in a new front-end dryer for its particle-board plant. This will significantly increase capacity, advancing its eMkhondo plant, in Mpumalanga, to more than 1 000 m3/d of particle-board production. The project includes a complete replacement of the entire fibre preparation line, with new technology and higher capacity, including the installation of a Büttner energy plant and dryers, screening equipment, a new flaker and a new conveyor system.

This additional investment comes on the back of the R600-million already spent on a new Siempelkamp Contiroll press and forming line.

The next stage is to build an additional medium-density fibreboard (MDF) plant at the same location.

Currently, PG Bison produces 400 m3/d at its MDF plant, in Boksburg, Gauteng. The new additional plant will increase this to 800 m3/d, providing PG Bison with a total installed capacity of 1 200 m3/d between the two MDF plants.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
R560-million will be invested in the new front-end dryer for the particle-board plant.

About R1.42-billion will be invested in the new MDF plant.

Planned Start/End Date
The new front-end dryer for the particle-board plant project is due for completion by December 2021.

The MDF project is scheduled for commissioning in mid-2024.

Latest Developments
PG Bison has successfully commissioned its latest expansion project, with the installation of the higher-capacity dryer and fibre preparation facilities at its at eMkhondo (Piet Retief) manufacturing facility.

The commissioning marks a major milestone for PG Bison and the wider decorative panel industry in Southern Africa, as it provides additional capacity in a market where there has been increasing demand in recent years, the company has said.

The expansion brings the eMkhondo plant line with PG Bison’s Ugie board plant.
