The National Assembly on Wednesday approved the nomination of Lumko Mtimde, the former head of the Media Development and Diversity Agency, and six others as councillors for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

Paris Mashile, a former Icasa chairperson, is also in the group. The names will be forwarded to Communications Minister Faith Muthambi for appointment.

Icasa has for some time been functioning with less than half of its component of nine full-time councillors, after the terms of several, including chairperson Stephen Mncube, expired.

But the appointment process suffered delays. In June, a report recommending eight candidates was held back after concerns were raised about two of them. There were allegations that one of them, Thami Ntenteni, had been convicted of culpable homicide related to a car accident in the 1990s.
