Name of the Project
Pallas research reactor.

Location
Energy & Health Campus, in Petten, the Netherlands.

Project Owner/s
Pallas.

Project Description
Pallas will be an advanced nuclear reactor, dedicated to the production of medical isotopes and (medical) nuclear technological research.

The reactor will replace the outdated high-flux reactor. The "tank-in-pool" type facility, with thermal power of about 55 MW, will be able to deploy its neutron flux more efficiently and effectively than the high-flux reactor.

The Pallas-reactor is designed to operate with low-enriched uranium, which means that the amount of uranium-235 is less than 20% of the total amount of uranium used, mostly 238U.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
€1.68-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Not stated.

Latest Developments
Spanish construction firm FCC Construcción (FCC) has been contracted to build the Pallas research reactor.

Netherlands Health, Welfare and Sport Minister Ernst Kuipers confirmed in September 2023 that full funding had been allocated for the reactor.

Construction will go ahead if the Dutch parliament does not object to the creation of a new State-owned company and if the European Commission approves the public investment.

"The coming period will be used for all the preparations necessary for the start of the Pallas reactor construction," NRG-Pallas said.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
ICHOS (general contractor and is responsible for the design, parts of the implementation, and commissioning of the Pallas-reactor); and FCC (construction contract).
