Order from Willowton Group continues 40 year business relationship with TAKRAF Africa

9th January 2018

Two Redler Chain Elevators ordered from key equipment supplier TAKRAF Africa by the Willowton Group in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, brings the number of machines supplied to this plant to more than 40 in a business relationship stretching back some 40 years. In addition to the 40, TAKRAF Africa has also supplied more than 100 Redler machines to Willowton Group in Isando. The machines include both Redler En-masse chain conveyors and chain elevators.

The Willowton Group commenced operations in 1970, and has grown to become South Africa’s largest sunflower seed crusher, palm oil importer, as well as one of the leading competitors in the South African FMCG market. The latest order for two Redler Chain Elevators replaces existing Redler Chain Elevators at the coal intake facility to feed the boiler house. The new machines are almost identical except for drive modifications as the original gearboxes are no longer available. Machines are today manufactured from laser cut plates, which eliminates boilermaker tolerances and ensures a perfect site fit.

The two Redler Chain Elevators are 10.7 m and 5.2 m in horizontal length, with a vertical height of 19.6 m and 11.4 m, respectively. Their conveying capacity is 15 tph of coal.

Previous Redler machines supplied by TAKRAF Africa have been applied for handling a wide range of products. Twenty-eight machines supplied in two past contracts for Willowton’s new Isando factory, in Gauteng South Africa, convey various products in the sunflower oil extraction process, including seeds, ‘meats’, ‘cake’ and ‘oil and foots’.

“TAKRAF Africa is proud to have been part of the incredible growth of the Willowton Group, a family-owned business which has seen considerable success as a result of its commitment to seeking fresh opportunities combined with maintaining the highest standards of quality,” says Antonie Le Roux, Specialised Handling Manager, TAKRAF Africa. TAKRAF Africa, previously known as Bateman Engineered Technologies prior to Tenova acquiring the Bateman Group in 2012, has supplied more than 5,000 Redler Chain Elevators and Chain Conveyors throughout Southern Africa over the past 40 plus years.

Proven over decades, Redler machines convey a wide range of solids, including coal, wood chips, sand, lime, cement, fly-ash, sunflower seeds, maize, wheat, flour, grain and many more. They convey particulate solids cleanly, gently and economically by inducing material to move like a liquid through dust-tight casings.  As a result, these low maintenance systems ensure minimal product degradation, while the dust tight casings protect the conveyed material and the environment from mutual contamination.
