Numsa secures wage increase of 8% for Gautrain employees, travel perk retained

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it has secured an above-inflation wage increase of 8% across the board for all workers at Gautrain and that the staff card will remain in place, enabling Gautrain employees to travel to work and home on the high-speed rail network at no cost.

The staff card had been a major issue of contention during earlier rounds of negotiations.

The union has been engaged in wage talks with Gautrain management since April and negotiations deadlocked in June.

Numsa members had balloted for a strike on Friday; however, Gautrain management requested a meeting over the weekend and made an offer to settle this round of wage talks, the union states.

It points out that the wage agreement is valid from July 1 to June 30, 2024 and includes an 8% wage increase; a 10% increase in the housing allowance to R1 210; a 5% increase in the transport allowance to R105 and a R500 increase in the key performance indicator bonus to R9 000.

The night shift allowance has been set at R35 an hour.
