The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) and the University of Pretoria (UP) have officially launched South Africa’s first Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Safety and Security (CNSS), at the UP Hatfield campus.

This dedicated institution for nuclear safety and security will provide a continuous supply of personnel trained in nuclear safety and security to serve the needs of the nuclear regulatory body and the nuclear industry in general.

The CNSS will also provide continuous professional development programmes in nuclear safety and security, conduct nuclear safety and security research to support regulatory activities and decision-making, and provide technical support services in nuclear safety and security to the regulatory body and the nuclear industry.

The CNSS is the first applied research and training establishment dedicated to developing essential skills demanded by South Africa’s nuclear sector outside the traditional university sector.
