Northern gas pipeline project, Australia

Name of the Project
Northern gas pipeline (NGP) project.

Location
The NGP will extend from Warrego, about 45 km north-west of Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory, across the Northern Territory/Queensland border, to connect into the Carpentaria gas pipeline about 7 km south-west of Mount Isa, in Queensland, Australia.

Client
Jemena.

Project Description
The pipeline will connect the existing Amadeus gas pipeline at the Warrego compressor station, in the Northern Territory, to the existing Carpentaria gas pipeline at Mount Isa, in Queensland.

The project will comprise a high-pressure, underground gas pipeline about 622 km in length and associated above-ground facilities.

The project includes:
• a 33 cm buried gas pipeline; about 457 km of which will traverse land in the Northern Territory and 165 km in Queensland.
• a start of line receipt/compressor station at Warrego, referred to as the Phillip Creek compressor station, located 45 km north-west of Tennant Creek, in the Northern Territory.
• three main line valve (MLV) facilities at locations along the pipeline, two covering about 0.12 ha each and one covering about 0.24 ha.
• an end-of-line delivery station located to the south-west of the Mica Creek meter station, in Queensland, referred to as Mount Isa compressor station.
• five cathodic protection stations, spaced between Phillip Creek compressor station, Mount Isa compressor station and the MLV sites, each covering about 0.04 ha. The cathodic protection sites will comprise buried anode beds, located generally less than 500 m from the pipeline.

The beds will be connected to the pipeline through buried cables.

Jobs to Be Created
Jemena expects the project to create more than 900 jobs during its construction phase.

Value
$800-million.

Duration
Construction of the project is expected to start this year, with first gas expected to flow in 2018. The exact timing depends on several factors, including the timeliness of the required approvals, access agreements with relevant stakeholders and weather conditions.

Construction of the Phillip Creek and Mount Isa compressor station is planned to extend through to early 2018, as access to these depends on dry weather conditions.

Commissioning of the pipeline, Phillip Creek compressor and Mount Isa compressor stations will occur after the construction period.

Latest Developments
The Northern Territory government issued a construction and pipeline licence for the project in May, enabling construction to start.
