With the preparations for ten new special economic zones (SEZs) to be completed within the next six months, the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry said on Wednesday it was pleased with the progress made by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in this regard.

Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies was in the process of appointing an SEZ advisory board, as stipulated by the SEZ Act of 2014, which was signed into law by President Jacob Zuma earlier this year and would be implemented once the SEZ regulations were completed.

The SEZ regulations, which were being developed by the DTI in consultation with various other departments, including National Treasury and the South African Revenue Service, would be completed by October.

The ten new SEZs would be based in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape; Harrismith, in the Free State; Johannesburg, in Gauteng; King Shaka International Airport, in KwaZulu-Natal; Tubatse and Musina, in Limpopo; Nkomati, in Mpumalanga; Upington, in the Northern Cape; Rustenburg, in the North West; and Atlantis, in the Western Cape.
