New-look Kyalami to host first race in October

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on Friday announced that the first race event to be held on the refurbished, new-look track would take place from October 21 to 23.

The October race meeting would form part of the Motorsport South Africa Extreme Festival National Racing Roadshow, and would feature motorsport categories such as Global Touring Cars, the Volkswagen Cup, Extreme Supercars, National Superbikes, as well as other motor racing categories, said Kyalami spokesperson Christo Kruger.

Construction work on the Midrand site was nearing completion, with a new chapter in the history of the race track about to begin, he added.

The 55-year-old race track was being revamped, upgraded and expanded in a multimillion-rand project by new owner, businessman Toby Venter.

Venter’s company, LSM Distributors, also owned the distribution rights to Porsche, Bentley and Ducati in South Africa.

Work on the 73 ha Kyalami site started in the middle of last year.
