Name of the Project
New Era assembly facility expansion and upgrade project.

Location
The project is located in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa.

Client
Beijing Automotive Works (BAW) South Africa.

Project Description
BAW plans to expand and upgrade its New Era assembly facility. The facility currently assembles semi knocked-down kits of the BAW Sasuka taxi for the South and Southern African market.

The project will result in the facility changing to a full assembly facility of complete knock-down kits of the Sasuka, and will widen the company’s export reach to more countries in Africa.

Apart from a general upgrade of the plant and facilities, the investment will allow for construction of a new body assembly plant, a paint plant, a trim plant, a larger component warehouse to support full production and a brand-new parts and accessory warehouse.

Jobs to Be Created
The expansion is expected to add an additional 100 permanent jobs, in positions ranging from production to quality assurance, logistics, after sales, marketing, management and supervision.

Value
BAW and the Industrial Development Corporation plan to invest R250-million in the project.

Duration
The project is expected to be completed by March 2018, when the first South African-produced Sasuka taxi rolls off the production line.

Latest Developments
Preparations for the new facility have started.

The design and construction of the facilities will be undertaken by South African companies, all of which are in the final tender phase. These include AG Consulting SA and MCB Consulting Engineers.
