The Competition Commission of South Africa on Thursday confirmed it had issued a R64.1-million fine to construction giant Murray & Roberts for its involvement in sector collusion related to construction projects for the 2010 World Cup.
“Yesterday [on Wednesday], the competition tribunal confirmed a R64.1-million fine to Murray & Roberts,” said the commission’s spokesperson Itumeleng Lesofe.
The fine, which needs to be settled by August 2016, was in addition to the R309-million Murray & Roberts had to pay in 2013 for collusion in the construction sector and formed part of the Commission’s second phase of investigations into collusion leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
During the Commission’s first fast-track investigation, Murray & Roberts had cooperated and as such, had reportedly received a lesser penalty. Others fined during this phase included Aveng with a R306.57-million, WBHO with a R311.29-million fine and Stefanutti Stocks with a R306.89-million penalty.
Going forward, Lesofe said the construction company was expected to cooperate in the remaining cases.
The second phase is expected to reach conclusion in March 2016.
