Management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald said on Tuesday that it was providing the construction and operational monitoring, environmental assessments and independent water compliance auditing for the R1.8-billion Mamba cement plant project.

The consultancy, which was the technical adviser for the project’s lenders, Nedbank Capital and the Bank of China’s Johannesburg branch, had already provided a technical review of the financing, design, construction and operation of the Limpopo-based plant.

The lenders had raised R1.1-billion debt capital to fund new entrant Mamba Cement’s construction and operation of a new one-million-tonne-a-year manufacturing plant, which was expected to be completed early in 2016.

The plant, which would produce and sell cement into the blended cements, readymix and construction industries across South Africa, would boast an on-site waste heat recovery system, generating 25% of the power required to operate the plant.
