JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi on Monday met with CEOs of companies in the coal and platinum sectors in Pretoria, as part of his focused engagements with stakeholders throughout the mining industry.

This followed his engagement with CEOs of companies in the gold sector on Friday.

“It is important that we deal proactively with issues facing the industry. Looking at trends in the mining industry globally, we are very much alive to the difficulties that these specific sectors face currently and we want to find solutions in our common interest and in the interests of South Africa,” he said during the meeting, held in Pretoria.

He added in a statement that the mining industry remained critical to the South African economy, creating over 500 000 employment opportunities and contributing 9% to gross domestic product.

“We are aware that we must provide certainty quickly to maintain South Africa’s standing as an attractive investment destination and we remain committed to doing so,” the Minister stated.

The Department of Mineral Resources said Ramatlhodi would continue to meet with representatives of business and labour in the industry in an effort to find “lasting solutions to current challenges”.
