Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza has described the late former President Nelson Mandela as a man who served the people of South Africa and the world with distinction.

He said Mandela was one of the finest leaders the ANC and Africa has ever produced.

President Jacob Zuma late on Thursday night announced Madiba's passing from the Union Buildings. He said Mandela had passed on peacefully in the company of his family.

“We have indeed lost a colossus, an epitome of humanity, equality, justice, peace and the hope of millions, here and abroad.

“His mortal material may have given up, but he will live with us in our memory,” Mabuza said.

Mandela spent almost three months in hospital this year after being admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in June with a recurring lung infection.

He was discharged in September and was receiving home-based medical care.

In preparation for the memorial services in the province, Mabuza has requested that all community halls in the province be reserved for this purpose.

According to Mabuza, there will also be a book where people can write their condolence messages.
