Malawi’s Northern Region Water Board is inviting prequalification applications for the upgrading and extension of the Chitipa district water supply system.
The water board says bidding for the assignment is open to Arab, African and Arab-African construction companies.
The assignment will involve the supply of materials as well as the construction of a water intake weir across a river and a water treatment plant consisting of three sedimentation tanks, six pressure filters, a backwash water tank, air blower, a chemical dosing house and accessories, an operators office and four staff houses. It will also involve the supply and installation or construction of 82 km pipelines with diameters ranging from 63 mm to 300 mm, six pressed-steel water-storage tanks, four pumpstations and related works.
The water board says applicants must have at least five years’ experience in Africa and must have successfully executed at least two similar contracts in the last five years. They must also have achieved a minimum average turnover of $10-million in the last three years.
The deadline for the submission of applications is July 31.
The Chitipa water supply system upgrading and extension project will be implemented as part of the second phase of Malawi’s multimillion-dollar National Water Development Programme, which is being financed with grants and loans from international donors, led by the World Bank’s International Development Association.
The programme aims to improve water and sanitation services in Malawi’s urban and rural areas.
