PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands miner Lynas has written an open letter to the Malaysian government calling for transparency and fairness in a potential review of the company’s plant.

Local media reports in Malaysia have been speculating about a review of the Lynas refinery, with a long-time anti-Lynas campaigner proposing to chair the review committee.

In its open letter, Lynas CEO Amanda Lacaze pointed out that the company had been in production for the last six years, with independent monitoring at the operation confirming that zero harm standards had been upheld.

“We are compliant with our licence conditions and we work closely with the Malaysian regulators to identify ways to continuously improve our operations,” Lacaze said.

Lacase expressed concerns around the formation of the review committee, and reported that it would be chaired by a person openly admitting to being anti-Lynas.

“From media reports, this person has been quoted as stating it will not be an independent review. To date, Lynas has seen media reports about this review committee; however, we have not been notified of the membership of this review committee, the scope of the review or the terms of reference of this committee,” she added.

“We acknowledge the absolute right of the government to conduct a review and will cooperate with confidence in our performance,” Lacaze said.
