Young Mining Professionals (YMP) has launched its latest chapter in London, in the UK, and aims to leverage the UK’s location as a “global hub for mining and finance” to provide opportunities for young people in the country’s mining sector and abroad.

YMP UK founder Catriona Beadel says the London chapter expands YMP’s reach to four cities, with the others in Canada, namely Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Therefore, the UK chapter is the organisation’s first international chapter.

Beadel recounts that YMP London was established independently at the beginning of 2017 and has hosted two successful events. “We were subsequently approached by YMP to merge with their network of chapters,” she explains.

Beadel says that YMP will look for opportunities to engage further mining cities worldwide to leverage the networks within these mining hubs.

YMP is a growing association of mining professionals that shares the goal of advancing the global profile and leadership of the Canadian and UK mining industries.

It was established to assist participants in obtaining the skills, support and knowledge needed to successfully advance their careers, develop a network of contacts within the industry and identify career and mining-related investment opportunities.

YMP facilitates these objectives through networking and social events, as well as high-profile guest speaker events throughout the year.

The organisation was founded in 2006 in Vancouver and has since then expanded to Toronto in 2015 and to Montreal and London in 2017. Each chapter hosts a range of events in its city, including the distinguished speakers series, which has attracted mining icons such as Peter Munk, Pierre Lassonde, Ian Telfer, Eira Thomas, Rob McEwen, Don Lindsay, Ross Beaty and Lukas Lundin, among others.

YMP, in partnership with Canadian trade journal Northern Miner, also hosts the Young Mining Professionals of the Year Awards, a yearly event held during the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada conference, in Toronto, at which a female mining professional and a male mining professional are recognised for demonstrating “exceptional leadership skills and innovative thinking” to provide value for their companies and shareholders, as well as for themselves.
