The project aims to build Europe’s largest lithium battery factory.

The factory will have four blocks of 8 GWh capacity. This requires a footprint of about 500 000 m2 or the equivalent of nine soccer fields.

The 32 GWh production site will require an investment of more than €4-billion over six years. Vattenfall is investing SKr5-million in the project.

Following the investment, it will own a minor share in Northvolt.

The Swedish Energy Agency and Swedish public innovation agency Vinnova, among others, have also provided Northvolt with financing.

Duration
Construction of the battery factory is expected to start in the second half of 2018, and large-scale production is expected to start at the end of 2020.
