Project Description
The project entails the construction of a new dam on the Diampwe river to increase the region's water supply capacity and meet the city's increasing demand. The new dam will also supply irrigation water and sustain a fishing industry. Water treatment plants and other ancillary works will also be constructed. There is a possibility that the new dam could also be used for power generation if a mini hydro plant is set up on the river.

The Lilongwe dam will help to meet the United Nations' Millennium Development Goal to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to potable water and basic sanitation.

The project is expected to start by 2013.
