Project Description
The project involves the restoration of the 54-year-old Kyalami racetrack, in Midrand, Gauteng.
The scope of the project includes the refurbishment of the existing racetrack, which encompasses the realignment of three corners of the track, thereby improving safety and access to the venue, as well as developing engineering solutions for a friendlier track-day experience.
Further, to enhance racing day experience for drivers and spectators, the spacing of the bleachers will be increased and the pit-lane exit for drivers will be extended to enable vehicles to exit the racetrack quicker.
The restoration will assist in re-establishing the racetrack as a venue for international sporting events.

Work on the project started on May 12, 2015, and is expected to reopen towards the end of October this year.
Latest Developments
Construction work at the Kyalami racetrack is “progressing well”, Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit spokesperson Christo Kruger has said.
Work on the 73 ha Kyalami site started in the middle of last year.
The new racetrack has been completed, along with the safety fencing. Some equipment still has to be installed, however, such as a public address system and the necessary timekeeping equipment.
Work on the pit building, conference centre and dynamic handling track is continuing.
Recent heavy rain in Gauteng has delayed the construction process, notes Kruger. However, he is hopeful that the pit building and conference centre will be completed by the end of May.
All work should be completed by October.
The Kyalami racetrack is set to host the South Africa Bike Festival at the end of May, as well as the South Africa Festival of Motoring, which starts on August 31.
The track has hosted several motoring-related events, such as the launch of the new Toyota Hilux.
The first racing event is scheduled for early 2017.
