Kudu combined-cycle gas turbine project, Namibia

Name and Location
Kudu combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project, near Oranjemund, Namibia.

Client
Nambia Power Corporation (Nampower – 51%), CEC Africa (30%). Other equity partners for the remaining share are still to be selected.

Project Description
The project involves the development of the Kudu gasfield, located off Namibia, which contains an estimated 1.3-trillion cubic feet of gas.

The gas produced will be delivered to a 800 MW CCGT power station, 25 km outside Oranjemund, through a 170-km-long pipeline.

The project will be connected to the Namibian and South African grids.

NamPower will buy power from the plant under long-term power purchase agreements for local and regional use.

Value
The project is estimated at $1.2-billion.

Duration
Commercial operations are expected in the first quarter of 2018.

Latest Developments
Namibia has picked China's Shanghai Electric as the preferred bidder to build the Kudu power plant.

The Kudu project in south-western Namibia will pump gas from the Kudu field about 170 km offshore to a CCGT power plant.

The plant, which is expected to have a total capacity of up to 800 MW, will be connected to the Namibian and South African electricity grids for local and regional use.

Meanwhile, Germany's Siemens has been selected as the supplier of generators and turbines.

A consortium of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Sumitomo and Posco Energy has been selected as a reserve bidder, meaning it will be turned to if negotiations with Shanghai Electric fail.

Namibia has been working on projects to boost supplies of electricity in the country, one of the world's top uranium producers. Its current installed capacity is 507 MW, below a demand of 534 MW. Demand is expected to rise to 800 MW by 2018.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
