Project Description
Kilimanjaro International Airport requires upgrades and expansions to accommodate the expected future growth of air traffic at the popular tourist destination.

The project includes:
• extension of parallel taxiways to enhance runway capacity;
• expansion of the apron to create more aircraft parking stands; and
• rehabilitation of all airside pavements.

Further, the terminal building will be reconfigured and rehabilitated, which will include:
• creating a central commercial lounge and separate waiting areas for domestic and international passengers;
• improving security and passport control processes to modern international standards; and
• constructing a new roof terrace to increase the capacity of the lounge area.

Value
The project is estimated at R450-million.

The project is partly funded by the Dutch Grant Facility for Infrastructure Development and by a commercial loan to the Tanzania Ministry of Finance.

Duration
Work was due to start in July and is expected to be completed by early 2017.

Latest Developments
Construction supervision of the upgrade to Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport will be undertaken by local consultants Royal HaskoningDHV and Tanzanian subconsultant, Howard Humphreys.
