Katende hydroelectric project, Kasai Occidental, southern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Project Description
The hydroelectric plant will be built in the south of the DRC and it is expected to have a capacity of 65 MW when completed.

The project is part of the government’s plan to alleviate chronic power shortages in a country where just 6% of the population has access to electricity.

Value
The value of the project is estimated at $280-million.

Duration
The project is due to begin in November and is expected to be completed in late 2015.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Exim Bank of India (line of credit).

Latest Developments
An agreement extending a $168-million line of credit was signed between the DRC Finance Minister and the chairperson and MD of the Exim Bank of India in July.

The remaining $112-million of the cost estimate will be provided by the government of the DRC.
