Project Description
Johannesburg has an estimated 4 000 uncovered manholes, which the metropolitan municipality will cover through the manhole cover replacement project.  In the last two financial years, more than 200 deaths were reported as a result of uncovered manholes in the city.

The project forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s future network upgrades plan, which aims to improve the road infrastructure. 

The project will also include traffic accommodation, relocation of services, stormwater, roadworks, road signs and markings. Work will be carried out during off-peak times during the day to fast-track planned upgrades to minimise the impact on road users and pedestrians.

Latest Developments
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba launched the city manhole cover replacement project on August 10. He said that the upgrades would ensure that businesses could transport their goods and would allow residents to safely move across the city.
