Name and Location
Isiolo International Airport project, Kenya.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of an international airport, in Isiolo county, 285 km north of Nairobi.

It will feature a new 34-m-wide, 1.4-km-long runway to accommodate heavy commercial aircraft. In addition, it will have two taxiways and three aprons for aircraft to park and refuel.

Another runway stretching into the Nyambene county council is being considered, with the passenger terminal and control towers to be located in Isiolo county.

The region of Isiolo is a major component in Kenya’s Vision 2030 economic development plan. The plan calls for the county to become a tourist destination, with the introduction of casinos, hotels, upscale retail outlets, a modern airport and other transport facilities.

The project will cost $7-million.

Duration
The project is scheduled to reach completion at the end of March 2012.

Client
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

Kundan Singh Construction (construction).

Latest Developments
In March 2011, construction works started at the airport and will be completed by the end of March 2012. This work is scheduled to end within the contract period of 365 days from March this year, after which Kundan Singh Construction will hand over the facility to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

It was initially planned that construction work would begin in 2010; however, this was delayed owing to some disagreements between the county councils of Isiolo and Nyambene.
