Isang substation project, Botswana.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a new 400/220-kV substation to be located about 40 km from Gaborone, in Botswana. The facility will help support the integration of electricity generated by the 600-MW Morupule B power plant into the country's national grid. In addition, the unit will electrify some 100 villages and several other villages experiencing severe power shortages.

The project also includes the construction of a 400-kV transmission line from the Morupule B power station to the Isang substation.

Latest Developments
ABB has been awarded a contract to design, supply, install and commission the Isang substation project.

The firm will supply eight fully equipped 400-kV and 220-kV bays at the project site. The substation will be the first in the region to be equipped with an IEC 61850-compliant automation, control and protection system. The system ensures interoperability and open communications between substation devices and other grid installations.
