South Africa this week further opened up the export potential of the country’s deciduous fruit to Indonesia after the Indonesian Agricultural Quarantine Agency granted South Africa “Country of Recognition” status for the food safety control system blanketing various horticultural products.
The move opened up the Port of Jakarta as an entry point into Indonesia and established a new trading regime that would ease the import process and documentation requirements for apples, apricots, cherries, citrus fruits, grapes, nectarines, pears, peanuts, plums and prunes.
“This is the result of a team effort between the public and private sector and will greatly assist in creating a more stable trading regime to grow our exports to Indonesia,” Hortgro executive director Anton Rabe said in a statement.
The document was signed by the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman on April 11 and forwarded to South African Embassy in Jakarta political counsellor Willem Geerlings.
