HESA announces interim chairperson

Dr Max Price

Higher Education South Africa (HESA), an association of South Africa’s public universities, announced the appointment of its deputy chairperson, Dr Max Price, as interim chairperson of the HESA board.

Price has led the University of Cape Town (UCT) since July 2008, where he was instrumental in elevating UCT’s status to that of a leading university in Africa and a formidable global player in higher education. Within HESA, he was serving his second term as deputy chairperson of the board.

Prior to this, Price served as dean of the faculty of health sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Price's appointment follows Dr Saleem Badat’s decision to step down as the chairperson of the HESA board and his recent resignation as vice-chancellor of Rhodes University.

HESA CEO Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele expressed the board's gratitude to Badat for the contribution he made over the years to the work of HESA. "Undoubtedly, Dr Badat contributed immensely to the policy reforms in our Higher Education system," he said.

“Equally, HESA is pleased to welcome a person of Dr Max Price’s calibre as its interim chairperson and looks forward to working with him to further advance the interests of our higher education system as a whole,” Mabelebele stated.
