The impact of the strike in the metals and engineering sector, which entered its fourth day on Friday, had started to filter down to vehicle manufacturers, with General Motors South Africa (GMSA) this week suspending production at its main South African assembly plant in Port Elizabeth.
GMSA halted assembly on Thursday after the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa- (Numsa-) led strike impacted the supply of components to its production line.
“We undertook contingency planning to minimise disruption of supply to our plant and to also ensure sufficient inventory of finished vehicles,” said GMSA corporate communications manager Gishma Johnson.
GMSA said its parts and accessories operations, as well as the Isuzu truck plant, in Kempston Road, Port Elizabeth, continued to operate as normal.
