GIBB professional takes over as YPF National Treasurer

17th October 2014

Company Announcement - Phylicia Moseamo, an electrical technician with GIBB’s Power and Energy sector, has been appointed National Treasurer of Consulting Engineers South Africa Young Professional Forum . The Young Professionals Forum is a group of young professionals under the age of 35, passionate about sustaining and promoting the engineering consulting profession.

“I have been involved with the YPF Gauteng North Branch Committee since 2010, heading its events programme where we facilitate projects that promote engineering as a profession and addressing issues that concern the young professionals. These activities include inviting guest speakers to provide ideas and motivation for membership,” said Moseamo.

She explained that the skills she has acquired in project management, design, on-site monitoring of contractors and budgetary control stand her in good stead for her new role in the YPF.

The forum has five main objectives:
• To create awareness of the engineering industry and promote engineering as a profession of choice;
• To promote the development of high quality professionals in the engineering industry;
• To grow and retain the pool of young professionals;
• To address relevant issues that affect young professionals;
• To foster, cultivate and understand relationships with client bodies and other Engineering Council South Africa (ECSA) recognised voluntary associations.

“One of our main focus areas is bringing engineering and specifically consulting engineering to young school learners to help them understand what the profession is about and why it is such a worthwhile and rewarding career. This is done through discussion groups, providing guest speakers at events and attending career open days and exhibitions,” she explained.

Moseamo explains that all member firms of CESA have similar concerns over the shortage of technical skills facing the country and as the ECSA statistics show, South Africa has a dire shortage of qualified engineers yet has a huge demand due to future development initiatives.

“We believe that by providing support and addressing the issues that affect young professionals, we will encourage them to study and achieve professional status in the field. Ultimately our aim is to increase the pool of individuals entering the profession, which will create a healthy environment for the future,” she said.
