Gauteng’s dam levels have inched down owing to a lack of rainfall as winter progresses and, despite the “stability in the system”, water users are cautioned to use water sparingly.

The Integrated Vaal River System is continuing to decline week-on-week, edging down 0.5% this week to 84.1%; however, many of the 14 dams forming part of the system remain above the 50% mark.

The Vaal dam’s water levels contracted 0.7% to 93.9% this week – still well above the desperate 36% reported during the same period last year.

The Katse dam decreased to 34.3% this week, from 35.6% last week, well below the 51% reported during the corresponding week a year ago, while the Sterkfontein dam’s water levels remained unchanged at 91.4%.

Further, the Grootdraai dam experienced a decline to 84.7%, while the Bloemhof dam increased to 99.5% this week.
