France will commit €2-billion towards boosting renewable energy in Africa before 2020, President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday.

Hollande made the announcement after meeting with the heads of state from 12 African countries gathered at an international climate summit near Paris for negotiations on a global agreement to limit man-made emissions that cause climate change.

The amount committed by France is twice as much as the country contributed over the past five years, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

The German Economic Cooperation and Development Ministry also said it will contribute €3-billion to the project before 2020.

"Out of the 10 GW capacity that Africa aims for, we will be able to finance 2 GW," German development representative Ingrid Hoven said. "That means modern, clean energy for 25-million people."

Germany has said it will double its climate aid for developing countries to €4-billion per year.
