Richard O’Brien, the former CEO of Newmont Mining, has been appointed to the board of Canadian mining company New Gold.

Upon the retirement of Ian Pearce in August, O’Brien will assume the role of chairperson.

O’Brien has more than 40 years’ experience in the mining and energy sectors, including more than 20 years in CEO and CFO roles.

Chairperson of the corporate governance and nominating committee of the New Gold board, Nick Chirekos, said that he was confident that O’Brien would provide valuable leadership as the company prepared for increasing production and decreasing costs, transitioning to a significant free cash flow generator.

He also thanked Pearce for his commitment and contributions to the company since joining the board in 2016.

New Gold owns the Rainy River gold mine and the New Afton copper and gold mine.
