Former Eskom MD to be sentenced for fraud

Former Eskom managing director Dawid Malherbe is expected to be sentenced at the Belville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday after being found guilty of fraud and money laundering.

Malherbe was convicted in June this year and had gone on trial after a whistleblower flagged irregularities in the company's tender awarding processes, police said at the time.

Malherbe was the power utility's managing director between 2007 and 2009.

He had awarded tenders to his own company, Energy Utility Services.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Malherbe resigned as soon as the allegations surfaced. Eskom's losses were calculated to be around R65-million and the Asset Forfeiture Unit had recovered around R10-million through the attachment of his assets.

A second accused, who was not named, was granted immunity from prosecution after agreeing to testify against Malherbe.
